Real Hero, Forever

I was rummaging through some of my older writings and found this. I wrote a few days after his sudden death. The cartoons I borrowed from internet articles that posted around that time.

Real Hero, Forever

An ode to Christopher Reeve, (1952-2004)

Dedicated to Dana (who is also a Hero), their children, the spinal cord injured and countless others who tragically become our everyday unsung heroes. J. Garcia

Born of imagination

And a set of colored pencils.

Destined to exist only,

In comics, cartoons, and film.

Every child’s marvel,

And even a few adults too;

Was of donning those blue tights,

And soaring, soaring high

To save common humanity,

From evil’s terrible blights.

“SNAP!”

Faster than a speeding bullet!

“I can’t move,

I can’t feel,

I can’t breath!”

In an instant it happened.

More powerful than a locomotive!

He stares adversity

Square in the eye

He smiles, and smiles!

Forever smiling, he’s confident he will walk again.

And now he walks, he walks

With angels in the sky.

Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!

No cartoons, or even movie magic,

Can raise our fallen Hero now.

Now even Kryptonite

Must yield to

His honor, his will,

And determination!

Christopher fought to increase research funding and attention at a federal level by appearing in front of Congress as a patient advocate. And while ardent research continued, Dana Reeve established the Quality of Life Grants Program to aid organizations working to enhance the quality of life for those living through the day-to-day challenges of disability. In order to address individual quality of life needs

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) is a program created by the Christopher Reeve Foundation (CRF) to provide a comprehensive, national source of information for people living with paralysis and their caregivers to promote health, foster involvement in the community and improve quality of life.

The Christopher Reeve Foundation is committed to finding treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders, and improving the quality of life for people living with disabilities.

The Christopher Reeve Foundation

The Christopher Reeve Foundation's roots stretch back to 1982 when the American Paralysis Association was formed by a group of people that refused to accept the prevailing notion that the spinal cord, once injured, could not be repaired. The founders of the American Paralysis Association had an unwavering belief that researchers and neuroscientists, working together, would find a way to connect and regenerate the damaged nerves and cells that result in paralysis.

Christopher sought out the organization following his injury in 1995. As Christopher

The Core Pilot Program  Deadline for Core Pilot Program Applications Extended to March 1, 2006

The Core Pilot Program is designed to give investigators who work in fields other than spinal cord research the opportunity to participate in pilot studies of potential therapeutic interventions for spinal cord injury. Since many of the processes involved in spinal cord injury have parallels in other neurological injuries and diseases, it is possible that 'cross-over' strategies may provide new ways of understanding the mechanisms behind spinal cord injury, and also point out new directions for novel treatment options.

Johnny,

This was great!

I remember both days - the one I heard about the accident he was in, and the day I heard he died.

I also remember thinking about how weird it was that he played a paralyzed guy in a movie (Above Suspicion... great movie, btw!).

Love the cartoons :)
